Las Vegas Casino Evacuated After Bomb Threat
Max Avery
Players at Arizona Charlie’s casino in Las Vegas received a rude surprise over the weekend. A man walked into the casino, which primarily caters to local players, and told a female security guard that he had a bomb strapped to his chest. He showed her the homemade bomb and said that he would detonate it in five minutes.
The guard and other security personnel successfully evacuated the casino and the attached hotel. They also persuaded the man to step outside the casino. When he stepped out the door, Las Vegas SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics), fire department and bomb squad teams surrounded him and cordoned off the area.
Sgt. John Sheahan, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Police Department, said that the man continued to threaten to blow up the casino. SWAT negotiators talked with the man, but did not release the reason behind the bomb threat. After two hours of negotiation, police took the man into custody. No one associated with either the casino or the authorities was injured.
Police did not release the man’s name, but described him as a slim, white male with gray hair. Bomb squad personnel later determined that the device the man showed the security guard was a fake.
An unnamed police officer theorized that the disturbed man wanted to commit “suicide by cop”. The man tried to incite police several times to shoot him, telling them that, if they did not kill him, he would blow up the casino.
During his time in custody, he will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine his reasoning behind the threat.
