Martin Jacobson Leads EPT Vilamoura Day 3
Jason Ferguson
Martin Per Jacobson has taken the lead at the European Poker Tour event in Vilamoura, Portugal. Jacobson holds the chip lead after Day 3 with 1.36 million chips, the only player to pass the million-chip mark. He holds a dominating chip lead over second-place Marco Leonzio (778,000) and third-place Guilllermo Garcia (766,000).
Jacobson is an accomplished young pro while only playing in a few major tournaments over the last two years. He made a final table at the EPT Budapest event in 2008 and at the World Poker Tour Venice tournament last year. He also made two final tables in US$1,500 buy-in no-limit Texas Holdem tournaments at the World Series of Poker in the last two years.
Despite his accomplishments, including career tournament earnings nearing US$1 million, Jacobson has yet to win a major event. He finished second at the WPT Venice event in 2009, losing the heads-up match to fellow Swede Ragnar Astrom. Jacobson took home €238,840 (US$319,518), his biggest career payday.
Although Jacobson carries a huge chip lead going into Day 4 action, his lead is no guarantee of success. Day 2 chip leader Brandon Cantu fell hard during the furious Day 3 action. He was eliminated in thirty-sixth place and earned €8,381 (US$10,742).
Day 4 of play will start with twenty-four players. Play will continue until only eight remain. The final eight will meet tomorrow for the final table. The winner will receive €467,835 (US$593,778).
