Scott Seiver Wins WPT Championship
Victor Pereira
Scott Seiver translated his online poker skills to the green felt to win the 2011 World Poker Tour Championship in Las Vegas. Seiver earned US$1.6 million for the win in the prestigious US$25,000 buy-in event. He defeated Texas Holdem tournament veteran Farzad “Freddy” Bonyadi, who earned US$1.06 million for second place.
Seiver started the six-player final table only 20,000 chips behind chip leader and WPT Player of the Year points leader Galen Hall. Hall started with 5.095 million chips to Seiver’s 5.075 million. The two front-runners were just under 1.5 million chips ahead of the nearest contenders, Roger Teska (3.6 million) and Tony Gargano (3.555 million). Bonyadi started with the second-shortest stack (2.47 million), just ahead of Justin Young (1.75 million).
Bonyadi quickly climbed up the leaderboard as Young, Gargano and Teska fell to the more experienced players. During three-handed play, Hall took some bad beats from Bonyadi, eventually falling in third place. However, his finish at the season-ending event all but assures him of the WPT Player of the Year title.
At the start of heads-up play, Seiver held a three-to-one chip advantage on the veteran Bonyadi. On the final hand, Bonyadi went all-in at the river with two pair, queens and tens. Seiver called with a king-high straight he filled on the last card to take his first WPT title.
The WPT title represents Seiver’s biggest payday as a pro and increased his career earnings total to just under US$4 million. Seiver also earned a World Series of Poker bracelet in 2008 and a high-roller title at the LA Poker Classic last year.
Here are the final table results:
1. Scott Seiver — $1,618,344
2. Farzad Bonyadi — $1,061,900
3. Galen Hall — $589,355
4. Roger Teska — $371,665
5. Tony Gargano — $278,749
