Question: What makes Texas Holdem Poker so amazing?
In recent years Texas Holdem has become more than synonymous with poker; in fact, it has become the only poker.
Televised WSOP and WPT tournaments and have amassed international audiences ranging from twenty-year-old hustlers to old school Five Card Draw fans, and neither group can resist the pull of the tourneys’ Main Event – in both cases, a no-limit Texas Holdem final table.
But what makes people turned players, from Bahrain to Belgium, so obsessed with Texas Holdem? Is it the name? Certainly, its arse-kicking association with the U.S. state whose motto is “Don’t mess with Texas” only makes us want to mess with it more. But that can’t be all of it. Is it the rules? Probably not. In truth, they’re not that different than those of Seven Card Stud.
So what is it, then? What makes Texas Holdem hold our attention?
Below, are the three simple answers, as compiled by our Holdem-obsessed editors. Enjoy!
Texas Holdem is great because…
- Holdem is “Easy to Learn & Hard to Master”
Trite? Yes.
Cliché? Check.
True? You bet your Texas Holdem – lovin’ arse!
Holdem appeals to newbies because its rules are simple. Texas Holdem strategy, however, is another story - a very long, complicated, twisted story. It includes but is not limited to scheming, predicting, calculating, orchestrating, attacking and withdrawing. The list of pre- and in-game Texas Holdem tactics is a battlefield blueprint, which is one of the best explanations for Holdem’s popularity.
- Texas Holdem Poker ain’t for slowpokes or stoics
Texas Holdem is a game that crams a lot of drama into quickly played hands. There are only two hole and five community cards, which means play is fast.
It also means that the game has a psychological component – everyone can see five of the seven available cards with which you will make up your hand - that is absent from other poker games (except maybe Omaha); hence, the previously mentioned scheming, predicting, calculating, orchestrating, attacking and withdrawing, all of which contribute to the game’s drama.
- Everyone wins…but good players win more
Naturally, better players win more often. This is true in every game, whether football, Poker or Pac Man. But Holdem – again thanks to the aforementioned strategies – allows players a bigger edge, while newbies typically get lucky, then bold, then lose…a lot.
It’s the latter that keeps the dream alive. Beginners are drawn to the game because it’s easy to learn and they’ve had a bit of luck. It’s also the thing that makes Texas Holdem Poker so seductive…it’s just plain unpredictable.
If you want to impress your Friday night poker friends with your vast knowledge of Texas Holdem history or are hoping to one day win the WSOP but need to shake the nervous tic – a devilish grin and the giggle of a ten-year-old girl – that gives away every decent starting hand you’re dealt, stick with Gambling City. We’ve got the tools you need to win.
